When I Consider

As I write this, I am looking out of the window of a plane on a flight to Chicago. I might've spelled Chicago wrong while writing that sentence, trying to remember where the letters were on the phone keyboard… but read Psalm 8 with me:

O Lord, our Lord,
How excellent is Your name in all the earth,
Who have set Your glory above the heavens!

Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants
You have ordained strength,
Because of Your enemies,
That You may silence the enemy and the avenger.

When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,
What is man that You are mindful of him,
And the son of man that You visit[c] him?
For You have made him a little lower than [d]the angels,
And You have crowned him with glory and honor.

You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands;
You have put all things under his feet,
All sheep and oxen—
Even the beasts of the field,
The birds of the air,
And the fish of the sea
That pass through the paths of the seas.

O Lord, our Lord,
How excellent is Your name in all the earth!

As I looked out across the vastness of the earth from the plane, I could not help but consider the grandness and majesty of God. I also couldn’t help but think of what David was thinking while writing this. He wasn’t tens of thousands of feet up in the air. He didn’t know about the extent and magnitude of the universe and how it continues to expand. He didn’t know about the complexity of the cells in the human body, the speed at which action potentials jump between axons… These would all be foreign to him, just as was Jesus’ name. But yet these words of such magnitude are so beautiful as they are so true, even without his knowing of the details.

How great a glory do you think David is singing now in the house of the Lord Jesus? How can you imagine Him reacting to finding out this information? David gave the grandest of titles of love, glory, and majesty as a king to the King of Kings.

Knowing what we know, how amazed are we going to be finding out more about God when we enter the gates? There is a whole universe we have yet to learn an inkling about.

All I can think of is wow. How great is our God!
